Hair regrowth & rejuvenation

Hair loss is no longer an inevitable march to baldness. Medical advances in recent decades mean male hair loss can be treated.

Male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) is a significant cosmetic concern, with 50% of men over 50 years of age being affected. In the U.S. Androgenic alopecia is a multifactorial genetically driven condition. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) appears to be one of the triggers for androgenic alopecia in genetically proven individuals. Testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. Once formed, DHT attaches to the hair follicle and triggers the process of miniaturization of the hair follicle. As the follicle is miniaturized, the hair shaft diameter decreases until the normal terminal hair becomes a fine vellus hair, like peach fuzz. More recent therapies for androgenic alopecia have focused on blocking 5 alpha reductase (such as the oral use of finasteride, propecia).

Several health conditions, including autoimmune disorders, diabetes, thyroid disease and iron deficiency anemia, vitamin D deficiency, etc. can cause hair loss. While thyroid blood tests and other lab tests, including a complete blood count (CBC), on people who have ordinary hair loss are usually normal, it is important to exclude treatable causes of hair loss.

Medications: Hair loss can be caused by drugs used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure and birth control. Intake of too much vitamin A may cause hair loss as well.

Hair loss can also result from: Radiation therapy, a trigger event (stress, surgery), certain hairstyles and treatments.

Dr Georghy will give you a physical exam and ask about your medical and family history. He may also perform tests, such as: Blood test, Pull Test, scalp biopsy, light microscopy.
